Simple Swedish Podcast #9 – My language learning routine

I’ve been teaching myself languages for the past 10 years, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Hungarian, Russian and I’m now studying Czech. In this episode I’m talking about my current routine for learning languages:) Don’t forget do download the free transcript here below!

Listen to the episode and try to understand as much as possible.
Go through the text and translate the words you don’t understand, until you understand most of the text.
Listen to the audio while reading the text. Pause if you need to.
Now listen to the audio without the text. Pause/rewind if you need to. Get back to it in a few days again.

Bonus tips:

Remember the Pareto Principle. 80% of your progress comes from 20% of your effort. Don’t aim to get 100%, 80-90 is better if you want to be efficient 🙂
Listen to podcasts whenever you’re on your way somewhere, cooking, washing dishes, standing in line, traveling, or any other time you can’t sit down to study, but you can use your ears.

This is fantastic!

I was actually quite surprised by how closely my routine superimposes yours. Every morning I will devote roughly 45 to (no more than) 60 min to my Swedish lesson, aiming to cover at least two latter areas i.e. grammar or listening. I also find it important to have the lesson the same time every day (except Saturday, aka my day off) during breakfast to complete the lesson as it helps to maintain consistency. Also because I enjoy drinking coffee at this time of the day, I can tie in the learning process with a positive stimulus (keeps the reward pathway in check!).

But definitely a great tip to encourage speaking…. Any ideas on how one can develop their speaking without a teacher?

  Hej! Jag svarar på svenska då, säg till om det är något du inte förstår (eller använd Google Translate). Det låter som en bra rutin du har. Jag gillar idén med att associera studierna med ett positivt stimulus! Att prata är såklart lite svårt om man inte har någon att prata med, men definitivt inte omöjligt! Du kan till exempel spela in dig själv, antingen bara ljud, eller som video. Det hjälper mer än man tror faktiskt. Jag har ibland spelat in mig själv som stories på Instagram också, då är det lätt att följa utvecklingen, och man har en chans att inspirera andra människor också. Men det bästa är förstås att hitta människor att prata med. Du kan försöka hitta folk i ditt område. Om du bor i en stad kan du leta efter språkträffar, eller svenskträffar. Om det inte finns kan du försöka starta en. Jag rekommenderar också att ta lektioner online. Om du går in på iTalki så finns det många lärare där som inte är så dyra. Lycka till!
